It is one of the hot spots of the Raleigh North Carolina area. In fact according to the U.S census Johnston County where Clayton is located is the fastest growing county in all of North Carolina. This is cheaper than what you’re going to find in Raleigh, Wake Forest, Cary, Apex or just about anywhere else in the Raleigh-Triangle area. You get more home for your money in Clayton than just about anywhere else in the area.
The next thing you need to know about Clayton is that it has an amazing downtown. Clayton has one of the best downtowns in all of the Triangle. Clayton has a great downtown, it is easily walkable, has free parking which is a rarity around the Triangle. The downtown has shops, restaurants. The most notable restaurant is by Scott Crawford who is one of the top chefs in our area. It has Crawfords Cookshop in downtown Clayton. There is a steakhouse, coffee shops, bakeries. The institution of downtown Clayton, Mannings. It’s a great restaurant has a rooftop patio area where you can go enjoy dinner or lunch on nice days, inside there is plenty of seating, great food, good atmosphere.
The next thing you need to know about Clayton is it is a bit isolated so the drive time between downtown Raleigh and downtown Clayton comes in anywhere between 25 and 30 minutes. The drive time from downtown Clayton to Research Triangle Park can be as high as 40 to 50 minutes. Also keep in mind a lot of the new construction that’s happening in Clayton is actually about 5 to 10 minutes out from the downtown area so you’re going to have to factor in an additional 5 to 10 minutes of drive time into these numbers.
The next thing you need to know, Clayton is in Johnston County. Again, Johnson County it is the fastest growing county in the state of North Carolina. According to the last census so just as a frame of reference that makes Johnson County the third largest county in the Triangle area.

Clayton and Johnson County in general are experiencing growing pains and there is a lot of road construction underway. Be prepared if you move to Clayton to be dealing with road construction, as well as new construction if you’re living out in the new construction areas. You will hear banging and hammering and sawing.
The next thing to know about Clayton is that it can feel rural. Even with all the growth, it still feels like the rural community it has been. Many of the new home neighborhoods are beside farms and fields. It can take some getting used to and it has that small town America feel.
Next, thing you need to know Clayton is changing rapidly. Clayton has always had a very small town feel and a relatively low population but again this is changing. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the entireTriangle so just know that you will need to be prepared for a lot of growth. Clayton could be a very very good fit for you if you like the small town rural feel or you don’t mind living in a rural community. Clayton could be a good fit for you if you want a larger house on a larger lot for less money.
